Candidates for SGA President
Candidate name: Anna Lifson
Candidate name: Brecel Limon
Past leadership experience: SGA Treasurer, Council of Clubs Chair, Pin@y Vice President, Golden Eagle Esports Treasurer, and Northeastern Programming Board Event Producer.
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? I believe that students are facing a lack of Student Life opportunities and limited financial resources, which are negatively affecting their overall college experience. Experiencing one or both of these challenges can leave students feeling disconnected and isolated, impacting their sense of belonging and satisfaction. Furthermore, financial constraints make it difficult for students to afford essentials, leading to stress and missed opportunities for personal growth.
How do you plan to address these issues? I believe securing increased state funding is key to expanding both Student Life opportunities and financial resources at NEIU. To achieve this, I will work closely with administration and collaborate with my colleagues to advocate for equitable funding. By presenting a strong case to legislators, we can ensure that NEIU receives the resources needed to create a more engaging and supportive environment for students.
What would be your first action once in office? My first action in office would be to host a town hall and place QR codes around campus to give students an easy and accessible way to share their concerns and ideas. This will help the Student Government Association (SGA) better understand the specific challenges students are facing. I’m committed to promoting real change, accountability, and transparency. I also want to make sure every student knows what the SGA is, what it stands for, and that at its core, it exists to serve and represent the students.
Candidate name: Damian J. Orozco
Past leadership experience: Platoon Commander MCJROTC ITW David Speer Academy, SGA Senator/Vice President
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? At NEIU, we face a critical moment—not just in leadership, but in how we choose to serve each other as a community. As a student leader and current Vice President, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that continue to hold our Student Government Association (SGA) back from doing the work students deserve. The truth is, too many students don’t know what SGA is, what it does, or how it helps them. That’s not a student problem—it’s a structural one. Our student government has struggled with internal disorganization, inconsistent follow-through, and a lack of real accountability. Without a strong foundation, even the best ideas fall flat. That’s why I’ve spent the past year focusing on leadership reform—quietly building systems of clarity, purpose, and accountability from the ground up. But that’s just the beginning. Our student body spans three campuses—Main, El Centro, and CCICS—yet too often, our efforts only reflect one. Representation must be intersectional and campus-wide. And as someone who is autistic, I know what it feels like to be unheard or misunderstood. I’m committed to ensuring that all students—especially those who are first-gen, neurodivergent, commuter students, parents, and students of color—feel seen, valued, and involved in shaping their experience here. Mental health support remains limited. Student feedback often vanishes into silence. And for many, NEIU still doesn’t feel like a true community. These aren’t abstract problems—they’re real, everyday barriers that prevent students from thriving. I believe we can build something better. That starts with leadership that listens, acts, and makes room for change to happen—not just in name, but in practice. I’m running for SGA President not to maintain the status quo, but to finish the work of rebuilding student government into a body that is effective, responsive, and driven by the real needs of our students.
How do you plan to address these issues? I believe that to truly serve NEIU students, we must begin by fixing the foundation of our Student Government. Too often, SGA has lacked structure, clarity, and follow-through—making it difficult to create the change students want to see. As President, I will prioritize making SGA more action-driven, transparent, and accessible. That starts with defining clear roles and expectations, implementing leadership training, and streamlining internal processes so we can function effectively as a team. Beyond structure, I’m committed to making SGA visible and approachable. Many students don’t know what we do, or how they can get involved. I want to change that through regular communication, public updates, open forums, and student advisory boards that ensure student voices are at the heart of every decision we make. Creating peace in our community and in the world is central to my platform. I will advocate for initiatives that encourage peace and understanding and I plan to launch a student-led research committee to understand what the specific factors are that prevent people from seeing the world through others’ perspectives, and to determine how societal structures can be designed to actively encourage perspective-taking in the public. Additionally, this committee will determine measurable ways in which education, public policy, and community initiatives address and bridge the divides between cultures, beliefs, and experiences. Lastly, its charge will be to determine what existing examples serve as models for this type of society, and how innovation and technology can be systematically leveraged to foster understanding and reduce division. Finally, I will make sure we serve all three campuses—Main Campus, El Centro, and CCICS—with equal attention and care. That includes rotating events and office hours, more consistent cross-campus communication, and initiatives to strengthen connection between our different student communities deserves a Student Government that works. One that listens, includes, and acts. That’s the kind of leadership I’m bringing to the table.
What would be your first action once in office? My first action in office will be to establish the creation of The Committee on Understanding and Progress (CUP). A committee dedicated to answering the following questions: What specific factors prevent people from seeing the world through others’ perspectives, and how can societal structures be designed to actively encourage perspective-taking in the public? In what measurable ways can education, public policy, and community initiatives address and bridge the divides between cultures, beliefs, and experiences? What existing examples can serve as models? How can innovation and technology be systematically leveraged to foster understanding and reduce division, and what safeguards are necessary to prevent misuse or unintended consequences?
Candidates for SGA Vice President
Candidate name: Gia Howard
Past leadership experience: Vice President of Black Caucus President/ Founder of Empower Us Mentoring club Vice President of Tutortastic, tutoring not for profit organization Treasurer for Tutortastic Head Mentor for Project Success
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? One of the critical issues I believe NEIU students are facing is a lack of meaningful engagement. While programming and opportunities do exist, many students feel disconnected from campus life. Whether this may be due to demanding schedules, lack of awareness, or simply just not feeling represented in what's being offered, engagement goes beyond just attending events. I believe that it's about building a strong community, fostering diversity, and giving students a say in shaping their experience on campus. Another critical issues NEIU students are facing is the lack of student presence in conversations with administration, especially when it comes to decisions for students. Too often, decisions that directly impact our experience are made without including student voices at the table. Whether it's policies, campus resources, or program changes, students deserve to be active participants in these discussions. When students aren’t included in conversations about their own needs, it creates a disconnect between what’s offered and what’s actually effective. This can lead to frustration, low engagement, and a sense that our concerns do not matter.
How do you plan to address these issues? To address Student engagement, I plan to prioritize initiatives that not only increase student involvement, but also make students feel empowered and excited while engaging with their community. Although we have leadership roles, I feel that additional leadership opportunities are necessary. I plan to establish other leadership opportunities in order for more students to step into roles where they can lead and represent their peers. This could include new student led committees, class representative positions, and other leadership opportunities that reflect the diversity and interests of our student body. To address the lack of student presence in conversations with administration, I plan to advocate for more intentional and transparent communication between the two parties. This includes creating opportunities for students and administration to have constructive conversations. This may look like student led discussions or structured feedback channels where students can speak directly with administrators so that communication is not just through surveys, but through real conversations. Additionally, I want to establish student representation on university committees and task forces so that our perspectives are included from the very beginning of decision-making processes.
What would be your first action once in office? My first action in office will be to implement initiatives that increase student engagement and satisfaction across campus. I believe this starts with ensuring that every student has a chance to be involved in meaningful ways. I plan to introduce more leadership opportunities that are accessible and inclusive. This means not just adding positions within existing organizations, but also creating new roles, committees, and programs where students can take the lead, build skills, and have a real impact on campus life. I also plan to collaborate with different clubs, organizations, and programs in order to create interactive and engaging activities for students to participate in.
Candidate name: Bushra Salihi
Past leadership experience: In my current role as a Senior Outreach Coordinator, I take the lead in organizing and executing a wide range of community initiatives, including cultural workshops, women’s health and cooking groups, and community events. I also lead specialized support groups, such as parenting circles and kids’ art sessions. As a strong advocate for community members and clients, I assist with immigration-related needs and help connect individuals to vital resources, including case management, therapy, and healthcare services. I regularly lead and participate in strategic meetings and actively cultivate and manage partnerships with organizations and agencies throughout the Chicago area.
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? One of the most critical issues facing NEIU students is balancing academic responsibilities with work, family, and financial pressures. Many students are first-generation college attendees or come from immigrant and underrepresented communities, which can bring additional stress and fewer support networks. Access to affordable mental health resources, consistent academic advising, and culturally responsive services also remain pressing concerns. In addition, building a stronger sense of campus belonging—especially for commuter students—is vital for retention and success. I believe addressing these issues requires a student-centered approach that values equity, inclusive programming, and strong community partnerships.
How do you plan to address these issues? I plan to address these issues by: • Improving Resource Access: Partner with campus services and community organizations to make mental health support more affordable and culturally sensitive. • Supporting Academics and Careers: Set up peer mentoring and workshops on time management, academic planning, and career development—especially for first-generation and underrepresented students. • Fostering Community: Organize events and create student panels to help commuter students feel more connected to campus. • Listening and Adapting: Regularly collect student feedback to keep improving our programs. By focusing on these areas, I believe we can build a supportive, fair community that helps students succeed both now and in the future.
What would be your first action once in office? My first action in office would be to hold a series of listening sessions with students, faculty, and staff. This would help me understand their immediate needs and priorities, establish trust, and ensure that our efforts are guided by the community’s voice from the very start.
Candidate name: Lafe Williams
Past leadership experience: Founder of Lyric Lounge Community Relations Director for student media board
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? The high number of POC students leaving NEIU because of the lack of inclusivity towards them from scholarships, spaces, events, and clubs.
How do you plan to address these issues? Figuring out what would make them more comfortable at NEIU the differences that they would like to see, what will make them feel heard instead of ignored and working with staff and students to fix this issue so that our transfer rates of POC's are down in the following semesters.
What would be your first action once in office? Having conversation with advisors to figure out if they have seen the same problem as well and if so what have they been doing to handle the problem and giving new approaches to the situation.
Candidates for SGA Treasurer
Candidate name: Geohnavi Marsakatla
Past leadership experience: As a Council of Clubs Representative in the Student Government Association at NEIU, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a bridge between student organizations and university administration. This role has allowed me to lead with purpose, facilitating communication, advocating for the diverse needs of clubs, and helping organize events that promote equity and inclusion across campus. I learned the importance of listening actively, empowering others, and creating space for collaborative decision-making—skills that have deeply strengthened my understanding of inclusive leadership and community building.
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? The demand for mental health support has increased among students. Financial challenges have led to concerns about resource allocation and the university's ability to maintain and expand programs. Ensuring that student voices are heard and their concerns addressed is vital. According to my knowledge, these are the concerns that NEIU students are facing.
How do you plan to address these issues? To address rising mental health needs, I will promote awareness of counseling services and work with student groups to host wellness events that reduce stigma. For financial challenges, I’ll advocate for transparent and student-centered budgeting that prioritizes essential resources like scholarships and academic support. To ensure student voices are heard, I plan to expand feedback channels such as forums and suggestion boxes so all students feel empowered to shape university decisions.
What would be your first action once in office? As Treasurer, my first action would be to review the current budget and spending trends to ensure transparency and accountability. I would then meet with club leaders and executive members to understand their financial needs and challenges. This would help me create a clear, organized funding calendar and streamline the reimbursement process making it easier for student organizations to access funds efficiently and equitably. My goal is to build trust and ensure every dollar supports student engagement and success.
Candidates for SGA Secretary
Candidate name: Hien Nguyen
Past leadership experience: I am a dedicated and well-rounded student leader with over four semesters of experience in Student Government Association, having served at both Wilbur Wright College and Ŕ¶Ý®ĘÓƵ. In addition to my work in SGA, I’ve served as Vice President of Golden Eagle Esports and have contributed to the NPB, further honing my leadership, teamwork, and event-planning abilities. My diverse involvement across various organizations has helped me build a solid foundation in leadership, making me a proactive and engaged member of my academic community
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? Critical issues facing NEIU students include financial accessibility, mental health support, diversity and inclusion, career readiness, technological access, and the need for improved campus facilities and resources.
How do you plan to address these issues? I aim to address these issues by working to enhancing mental health services, fostering an inclusive campus environment, increasing career development resources, advocating for better access to technology, and improving campus infrastructure to meet students' needs.

Candidate name: Simona Zlatkova
Past leadership experience: My leadership experience spans multiple areas, from academic and professional settings to community service and advocacy. This includes organizing events and promoting Student Media Board as an Event Coordinator, caring for elderly residents as a CNA, supervising children as a summer camp, or campaigning for leadership roles in Model Illinois Government. My participation in Ethics Bowl and Philosophy Club reflects my deep commitment to critical thinking and ethical leadership. I’ve learned the importance of adaptability, clear communication, and persistence. My work in MIG deepened my understanding of policy and transparent governance. I debated bills, built bipartisan consensus, and even campaigned for Speaker of the House—proof of my dedication to civic engagement. Despite my campaign loss, the experience itself was a gain, as it strengthened my ability to collaborate, debate policy, and advocate for meaningful change. These diverse roles have all reinforced one key lesson: effective leadership is about listening, serving others, and ensuring every voice is heard. These are principles I will bring to the SGA Secretary position, if elected.
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? I believe that inefficient or fragmented communication, such as lack of awareness about SGA and events, is the biggest issue facing NEIU. Students miss updates on events, policies, or opportunities due to scattered information. Departments and organizations act as separate entities, rather than as a collective unit. There’s benefits and drawbacks to this, as information is all over the place. This is a loss to students, as they miss out on opportunities. Many students do not know about SGA, how it works, what funds are available, or how and where to voice their concerns. This creates a distrust in our student government. SGA could solve this by becoming more visible.
How do you plan to address these issues? I would like to see an NEIU App to address the fragmented communication as well as updating our website more regularly. I would publicize SGA actions via social media, email, website, newsletters with detailed, easy-to-read minutes, budgets, decisions promptly after meetings. I would host bi-weekly or monthly SGA Workshops or tabling events, so that I can help students with any concerns or clarification on governance. I would try to establish a relationship with campus media, such as The Independent, to publish summaries of key votes and decisions. I value transparency and communication, and my actions will reflect on addressing those issues.
What would be your first action once in office? My first action is to establish relationships with other elected SGA members and organizations. I would try to establish a relationship with campus media, such as The Independent Newsletter, to publish summaries of key votes and decisions. Having a solid foundation lays the groundwork for an effective government cohort, allowing for meaningful discourse in benefiting our Campus as a whole. Once that is established, I can launch immediate transparency initiatives.
Candidates for SGA Communications and Public Relations Director
Candidate name: Apanwun Nchayou Alice
Past leadership experience: Throughout my academic journey, I’ve stepped into leadership roles that allowed me to make a meaningful impact. From February17, 2023 to December 15, 2023 I served as Student Advisory Board at computer Systems Institute where I acted as a student voice, providing feedback and recommendations to improve the academic environment while making sure student needs were met. This experience greatly strengthened my ability to listen, lead with integrity, and take initiative.
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? Today’s university students including NEIU Students face a range of challenges. Among the most pressing are: Mental health struggles due to academic pressure and lack of support. Financial burdens, from tuition fees to cost of living. Lack of student representation in decision-making processes.
How do you plan to address these issues? Mental Health: I will make sure I advocate for increased access to counseling services, awareness campaigns, and peer support programs. Financial Concerns: Push for more scholarship opportunities, student employment initiatives, and transparent budgeting from the university. Student Voice: Create open forums and digital platforms for students to regularly voice concerns and offer feedback.
What would be your first action once in office? On day one, I will launch a “Student Pulse Survey” to gather real-time feedback from students about their needs, concerns, and ideas. This will ensure that every initiative we take starts with the voice of the student body and reflects what matters most to them.
Candidate name: Hesed Gaiya
Past leadership experience: I have previously worked as a COC representative in SGA, where I embraced the opportunity to collaborate and inspire others whether it be the students that come in or my fellow teammates. Also, my involvement in various programs and communities’ programs has allowed me to be a driving force for positive change and use my leadership skills when it is needed.
What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? Some critical issues I've observed among NIU students include a lack of appreciation for their voices, despite numerous meetings aimed at addressing this. Additionally, many students feel there are limited opportunities and resources available, particularly for international students, immigrants, and those from diverse backgrounds. There's also a concern that administrative support is lacking, forcing students to navigate challenges on their own and seek help from higher-ups that at times don't even give them the right answer or any.
How do you plan to address these issues? I think I would address these issues by fighting harder for students' voices to be heard in a honest and true way. I would work to see if there is a way on creating a hub where students can not only find answers to their questions but also develop long-lasting solutions or alternatives. It's also important to establish clear communication channels so students can stay updated and feel included in the decision-making process.
What would be your first action once in office? The first thing I plan to do is REALLY listen to the students about the issues they urgently need addressed. From there, I’ll look for ways to collaborate with the administration to create solutions that genuinely benefit students. And create less of friction that is being had. It's crucial to hear their feedback, whether it's about making changes or recognizing when something isn't aligning with their needs. I want to ensure that we’re moving in the right direction without overpromising and under valuing the students that are here.

My vision for Northeastern is centered on creating a student-centered, accessible, and inclusive campus environment—where every student has the tools, spaces, and support needed to thrive academically, socially, and personally. I believe the role of Student Trustee goes beyond representation—it is about building connections between students and administration, advocating for resources that matter, and ensuring our voices are integrated into the university’s decision-making processes.
How do you plan to address these issues? In addition, I am committed to the renovation and revitalization of the PE Complex, which has long been underutilized. This facility has the potential to become a central hub for student wellness, recreation, and community-building. I will push for greater funding and strategic updates to areas such as the gym, showers, lockers, indoor track, and athletic equipment—ensuring students have a safe, functional, and welcoming space to support their physical and mental well-being.
What would be your first action once in office? I will prioritize is improving the cleanliness and functionality of essential campus resources. Many students spend long hours on campus, and it is crucial they have access to clean water fountains, functional microwaves, and updated kitchen supplies. I will also advocate for improved food and shopping options that are affordable and accessible to students.

What do you believe to the critical issues facing NEIU students? Campus Safety & Accessibility Safety and ADA accommodations remain a serious concern—automatic doors often malfunction, elevators are unreliable, and some areas are inaccessible to students with disabilities. A comprehensive safety and accessibility walk is long overdue to assess and address these concerns. Lack of Transportation & Campus Mobility The continued absence of a shuttle bus limits student mobility, especially for commuters and students attending evening classes. With the new education building under construction, improved campus transportation is even more essential to ensure safe and efficient movement across campus. Food Access & Committee Engagement Student participation in the Food Committee was minimal this year, leaving food-related concerns unaddressed. Increased engagement is needed to improve dining options, affordability, and availability. Limited Senate A partially filled Senate slowed down progress on key initiatives. A fully staffed and well-supported Senate is crucial for hands-on advocacy and to keep momentum going. Unmet Summer Needs Summer library hours are limited, impacting students who remain on campus and those taking summer courses. This remains a consistent issue year after year and needs to be prioritized. Student Voice & Administrative Collaboration This year emphasized making the student perspective visible, especially through outreach, surveys, and tuition advocacy. As administration becomes more receptive, now is the time to be louder, more direct, and push for visible outcomes in response to student input.
How do you plan to address these issues? To effectively address these ongoing challenges, I plan on prioritizing the initiative of teamwork by addressing it with the new executive team. My goal is to ensure stronger cohesion between the branches of student government-meaning more collaboration between the Council of Clubs and Senate, which have felt very separate this past year. A lack of connection and communication has often made it difficult to push initiatives forward, and I believe strengthening those relationships will help create real momentum. I think that with our new team, we would develop a lot of great involvement-with my slate's previous experience in leadership roles and campus organizations. I've seen them grow as leaders, balancing creativity with strategy and community. I am confident that they will foster a more connected and supportive environment within the future team. That kind of atmosphere will empower us to get more done and better serve the student body.
What would be your first action once in office? My first action in office will be properly listening to students' needs and addressing survey results with students firsthand to ensure I'm accurately representing them as Student Trustee for this university. It's important to me that students feel seen, heard, and directly involved in the conversations that impact them. I also plan to follow up with administration on unresolved student concerns from past semesters to show we're not just collecting feedback-we're acting on it.
