Agents of change
When Patricia Morales and Jos茅 Flores Sanchez came to Northeastern, neither anticipated that their education in the Department of Sociology would put them on a path to becoming the first people in their families to earn Ph.D.s. After graduating from Northeastern in 2017, Morales and Flores Sanchez both earned full scholarships to pursue their doctorates in the fall of 2019. Morales is attending the University of California, Santa Barbara and studying Feminist Studies. Flores Sanchez is attending Stony Brook University in New York and studying Women鈥檚, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

- Northeastern will be closed on Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
- Professor Emerita Ana Gil Garcia has been selected as the recipient of the Dr. John Hernandez Leadership Award by the Latinx Network. The award goes to an outstanding practitioner in higher education who has made significant contributions to the Latinx community on their campus or greater community. Gil Garcia will accept the award in March during the annual ACPA Convention in Nashville, Tenn.
- Assistant Professor of Linguistics Ariana Bancu presented a paper titled 鈥淭wo case studies on structural variation in multilingual settings鈥 during the Annual Meeting from Jan. 2-5 in New Orleans. She also presented "Stability of phonological variation in language contact settings,鈥 co-authored with University of Washington Ph.D. student Ella Deaton, during the North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics meeting that took place during the LSA Annual Meeting. Instructor Karen Duchaj presented a paper titled 鈥淪tressed syllable constraints on English names in pop music: Evidence from Lennon and McCartney鈥 during the American Name Society meeting at the same event.

- ABC7, Fox 32 and the visited Northeastern to cover a vigil for the victims of Flight PS752 that was shot down over Tehran, Iran, on Jan. 8. The event was sponsored by The Mossadegh Initiative at Northeastern in collaboration with the Iranian Student Associations at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
- Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton mentioned Northeastern鈥檚 University Without Walls program and the Prison + Neighborhood Arts and Education Project during an interview (around the 7-minute mark) about criminal justice reform with . Stratton鈥檚 annual report also mentioned the program on Pages 6-7.
- The previewed a Black History Month event featuring Dr. Greg Kimathi Carr of Howard University that is scheduled for Jan. 31 at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies.
