Marcelo Sztainberg, Ph.D., has been appointed Dean of ݮƵ’s College of Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR), effective July 1, 2025.
Dr. Sztainberg began working at Northeastern in 2003 and has been serving as Interim Dean of the college since February 2022. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Sztainberg was Chair of the Department of Computer Science for two terms and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He also served as Interim Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research from Spring 2012 to Spring 2013.
As Interim Dean, Sztainberg contributed to the development of new policies and practices that enhanced pathways for access to graduate programs at the University. His advocacy for student resources expanded the available support for graduate waivers for many University programs.
“I'm very excited to continue to support our graduate programs and research activities,” Dr. Sztainberg said. “The work we’ve done over the past few years in the CGSR will lead to growth among our programs. With our wonderful faculty and staff we will strive to sustain and develop new programs and initiatives to enhance our graduate offerings and sponsored projects.”
Dr. Sztainberg is actively involved in projects related to increasing diversity and representation in the science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce. He was the Founding Director of the Student Center for Science Engagement at Northeastern, an initiative initially funded by the U.S. Department of Education to increase recruitment, retention and graduation of minority students in STEM fields. He has also been active in many national organizations that support increasing diversity in computer science and STEM.
Currently, Dr. Sztainberg is the Principal Investigator (PI) on three National Science Foundation-funded awards, totaling $3.1 million. These awards include a collaborative project with three other Hispanic-Serving Institutions focused on incorporating cultural competencies in the development of information systems that support food security organizations; a collaborative project with Northwestern University to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) center that will serve students and industry in the Chicago area; and a scholarship grant to support Computer Science students. He is also a co-PI for a National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) funded initiative to expand digital knowledge to low-income populations and is the PI for a U.S. Department of Education Title V grant to support career pathways for graduate students at Northeastern. As Interim Dean, Dr. Sztainberg has also contributed to the development of multiple grant proposals and supported funded programs.
Dr. Sztainberg earned a doctorate and Master of Arts in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics (double major) from Wayne State University.
“I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our faculty and staff that work every day to make sure that our students' experience at NEIU will be transformative, expand their pathways into the workforce, and support our surrounding communities,” Dr. Sztainberg said. “As we continue to work together, I am confident that our efforts will grow our enrollment and we will continue to graduate not only leaders, but lifelong learners.”
