Literacy Center

Reading Teacher with Student

The NEIU Literacy Center tutoring program is operated by the Literacy Education graduate program. 

  • This program is designed for students in grades 2–12 who are reading below grade level or experiencing challenges with reading.
  • Participating children and adolescents receive a comprehensive assessment of their reading abilities and one-on-one, individualized instruction tailored to their specific needs and goals.
  • Instruction is provided by graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in Literacy Education under close supervision of an experienced Literacy Education faculty member.
  • The cost of the program is $150 for the term.

              

             

Fall Program Details:

  • Dates: Saturday mornings from September 20 – November 22, 2025

  • Format: In-person 

  • Where: The NEIU Literacy Center (Room 2003, Lech Walesa Hall, 5500 N. St. Louis Avenue, Chicago)

  • Session Times:

    • Younger students: 9:00 – 10:30 AM

    • Older students: 10:45 AM – 12:15 PM

      • Student placements are determined by the Literacy Center Director

  • Cost: $150 for the full term (10 sessions)

Important Notes:

  • Consistent attendance is essential. Our graduate students (tutors) rely on full participation to meet their practicum requirements. Please apply only if your child can attend all scheduled sessions.

  • While we welcome students who receive some specialized services, our program is not well-suited for children with severe learning disabilities, as our tutors are not all trained in the field of Special Education. If you're unsure whether this program is the right fit for your child, please contact Dr. Madda, Literacy Center Director.

  • This is not an enrichment program for gifted students or those reading above grade level. We also do not provide homework help or preparation for college entrance exams.
